I am Peter Gates. I began my working life as a mathematics teacher in 1976, becoming Head of Department in 1983. I moved into Higher Education in 1988 teaching on PGCE and Masters courses. I joined the University of Nottingham in 1993 and for 25 years worked on PGCE, MA, PGCEi, PhD and EdD courses. I directed the doctoral programme for a number of years, and taught research methods (qualitative and qualitative) to social science doctoral students for 15 years. My research and writing is largely with the areas of mathematics education, social justice. I retired in 2016 in order to spend more time working.
